This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

The Greek word translated “accursed” carries the force of being placed under a ban, so the wish here names separation from the Anointed One itself.

A loved one’s peril can wound you so deeply that you could wish to bear the ban from the Anointed One yourself. The verse holds that desire at its full cost: it is a wish for separation, not a softened figure of speech.

ἀνάθεμα

anathema

GROWS FROM

⁨τίθημι⁩ (tithēmi), through ⁨ἀνατίθημι⁩ (anatithēmi)

To set or place; in this word family, to set apart or devote. In New Testament use, anathema names a curse or one placed under a ban.

“Accursed” can sound like a general misfortune, but the word carries the force of being consigned under a ban. The verse names a wish to be cut off from the Anointed One, not merely to suffer alongside one’s kin.

ALSO GROWS

anatithēmi: To lay before, set forth, or submit.

ἀνατίθημι

Its sense of placing something before another helps expose the “set” or “placed” image within the word family, without reducing the curse to a mere act of presentation.

anathema: A thing devoted; in New Testament use, a curse or one under a ban.

ἀνάθεμα

This is the word used here and in Galatians 1:8, preserving the severity of the condition the speaker is willing to wish upon himself.

Χριστοῦ

Christou

GROWS FROM

χρίω

chriō

To anoint.

“Christ” is a title meaning “the Anointed One,” formed from the verb “to anoint.” So the separation named here is from the Anointed One himself; the English title can hide that the verse names a relationship, not simply a surname.

ALSO GROWS

Christos: The Anointed One.

Χριστός

This title makes clear who the speaker wishes himself separated from: the Anointed One.

chrisma: Anointing.

χρῖσμα

The related noun keeps the title connected to the act of anointing from which it comes.

συγγενῶν

syngenōn

GROWS FROM

γένος

genos

Kind, family, stock, or descent.

“kinsmen” in this verse is syngenōn. The word holds kinship as shared stock or origin, and “according to the flesh” makes that bond explicit. The grief is for people bound by descent, not an abstract crowd.

ALSO GROWS

syngenēs: A relative or kinsman.

συγγενής

This is the singular form of the word family behind “kinsmen,” naming relation by birth or descent.

syngeneia: Kinship or relationship by birth.

συγγένεια

This related noun makes the shared origin within “kinsmen” more visible.

Love for kin can make another’s peril personal enough to become intercession, even an impossible wish to bear it oneself.

But now, if you will release their falling short; and if not, wipe me out, I pray you, from your scroll which you have written.
Exodus 32:32 · SDVThe speaker asks for his people’s forgiveness and voices a willingness to be blotted out himself.
And the king trembled, and climbed up to the upper room over the gate, and wept. And as he walked, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would that I had died in your place, Absalom, my son, my son!
2 Samuel 18:33 · SDVGrief for a son becomes the explicit wish to have died in his place.
Brothers, the delight of my heart and my prayer to God for them is toward their deliverance.
Romans 10:1 · SDVThe same anguish for Israel takes the form of desire and prayer for their deliverance.
But even if we, or a messenger from the heavens, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be given over.
Galatians 1:8 · SDV

The Greek word ⁨ἀνάθεμα⁩ (anathema, one under a ban) translated “accursed” here is the same word used in Galatians 1:8. There the ban is pronounced on anyone preaching another gospel; here the speaker says he could wish to bear that condition for his kin, making the extremity of the wish unmistakable.
