This verse in the King James

King James wording
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

The Greek calls sound speech healthy speech: it leaves an accuser with nothing evil to say.

Your speech can be healthy and beyond condemnation, leaving a person who opposes you with no evil thing to say about you. When there is no true charge to speak, the shame rests with the one who came against you. The verse holds out that possibility now.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that criticism itself proves guilt; here, opposition can be present while no real accusation holds.

ὑγιῆ

hygiē

GROWS FROM

ὑγι-

hygi-

Health, soundness; being healthy or functioning as it should.

“a word of wholeness” in this verse is hygiē. English “sound” can suggest little more than correctness or acceptability. This Greek word belongs to the same word family as health and being healthy, so the verse pictures speech as marked by health; its soundness leaves hostility with no evil material to point to.

ALSO GROWS

hygiainō: To be healthy or sound.

ὑγιαίνω

This verb describes the state of being healthy, showing that Titus calls speech sound with the language of wellness.

hygieia: Health.

ὑγίεια

This noun names health itself, making “sound speech” speech marked by health, not merely acceptable form.

When integrity leaves no real charge to attach, hostile accusation is exposed by the very conduct it attacks.

Then the princes and the governors sought to find a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom, but they could find no charge or slip, for he was steady, and neither slip nor rot was found in him.
Daniel 6:4 · SDVThe search for fault comes up empty, leaving no true charge to support the opposition.
Keep your walk beautiful among the nations, so that, though they speak against you as doers of badness, they may watch your beautiful works and give weight to God in the day of watching over.
1 Peter 2:12 · SDVWhat can be seen in a person’s conduct stands against the accusation spoken about them.
Keeping a good shared sight, so that where they speak against you as evildoers, those who mistreat your good walk in the Anointed One may be put to shame.
1 Peter 3:16 · SDVA clear conscience exposes false accusation and turns the accuser’s shame back upon them.
Beloved, concerning all things I pray that your way goes well and that you are whole, just as your living soul goes well.
3 John 1:2 · SDV

Titus uses the word family of health for speech that is “sound”; John uses that same family for being “in health.” The shared root lets sound speech carry the sense of speech with the character of health, not only speech that passes a test.
